If you click on the link to the Borken county geodata atlas, you will find one of the first completed X-Border-GDI applications, the Geoviewer Tierseuchen (Epizootic Geoviewer). This tool merges data from the Ministerie van Landbouw, Borken county and the Gelderland province.

The background to the project is explained below.

During the swine fever outbreak in Borken county in May 2006, the epidemic was once again on the doorstep of the neighbouring Netherlands and Niedersachsen.

The legally required restricted and observation areas were no longer in North Rhine-Westphalia alone, but extended across state and national borders. Prior to this outbreak, the responsible municipal governments lacked suitable tools to visualise the restricted zones across borders. The “X-Border-GDI Geoviewer Tierseuchen” (“X-Border-GDI Epizootic Geoviewer) was supervised by Borken county and developed according to the specific requirements of its users. Together with the Dutch ministries LNV and VROM, Dienst Landelijk Gebied, Gelderland province, Bureau Nieuwland, Steinfurt county and with co-operation from the Grafschaft Bentheim district, an internet-based Web application was developed which compiles and visualises topographic and street data as well as administrative borders. It also processes stationary data, such as livestock companies or decontamination stations. The first step involves using this information for the public good. The next upgrade step will help to support responsible administrative personnel in their daily work. This task is especially complex: Various different data sets and technologies need to be merged in order to develop a cross-border solution which effectively meets the topical, technical and legal requirements involved.
